MSP highlights increase of just one primary teacher in Angus teacher totals for last year.

30 March 2009

North East Scotland MSP, Marlyn Glen, has written to Education Secretary Fiona Hyslop on the increase in the number of primary schoolteachers in Angus by just one last year in the latest census of teachers, “Teachers in Scotland”, published by the Scottish Government.

Ms. Glen said,

“The number of primary school teachers in Angus in 2008 rose last year to 559, an increase of just one on the previous year.

“The Scottish Government made a commitment that class sizes in Primary 1-3 in Angus will be reduced to a maximum of 18 by 2011.

“However, over 1,000 of primary 1 pupils in Angus and over 2,000 of primary 2 and 3 pupils are still in classes of over 18 midway through the term of office of the Scottish Government.

“An increase of one teacher will still make no difference to the inevitability of the commitment being broken.”

Ms. Glen has tabled a question in the Scottish Parliament asking the Scottish Government what estimate it has made of the number of additional primary teachers required in Angus to reduce the maximum class size to 18 in primaries one to three by 2011 and what it estimates the cost will be.
